What Are The Causes of Migraine Headaches ?

As advanced as science is, and with all the remedies on the market, nobody yet has been able to determine the exact cause of migraine headaches. Many researchers favor the theory that migraine sufferers have a nervous system that is more sensitive to stimuli that trigger this particular kind of pain.

Sudden changes in your body, or the environment around you, sets off changes in brain activity that causes inflamed blood vessels and nerves around the brain.

The pattern of migraine headaches that one person experiences, may be nothing like the next person's, which makes it difficult to pinpoint causes. One way to help your doctor determine what your personal triggers are, is to keep a headache diary.

When you feel a migraine coming on, write down what you were doing at the time, what you had been doing immediately prior to that, and what you have eaten that day.

Some of the most common triggers of migraine headaches include:

* Emotional stress * Lack of sleep or too much sleep * Food containing caffeine * Food containing MSG (monosodium glutamate) * Glare from lights or computer screens * Strong odors * Environmental facts such as high altitude, time zone changes and weather * Hunger * Hormonal changes in women

    Switching of migraine relief medication?

  • Adrian asked on Sun, 31 Mar, 2013
I am currently on pizotifen for migraine relief, however the apatite increase is unbearable, I have gained so much weight. I exercise regularly and eat as healthy as I can but the tablets are making me so much hungrier than I should be. I am thinking of coming off the tablets and relying on imigran. Is this wise? does anyone have any experience with imigran

When my debilitating migraine attacks had increased to the extent that they were occurring weekly, and affecting my ability to function and lead a 'normal life', it was time to find assistance. To find relief and help, my first port of call was to my General Practitioner who was most unsympathetic, implying that three young children, moving house and working were bound to have a detrimental...

As any seasoned migraineur will tell you, they can list the migraine food triggers that send them off into a headache. For me, alcohol is the winner. And I mean just about all forms including most wines, beer and mixed drinks. (Hey, the good news is..I will never be an alcoholic. The pain is just not worth it!) Funnily enough, when I was young, I thought a horrible pounding headache with...

Migraines are thought to be caused by the dilation and constriction of arteries in the head. These can be extremely painful headaches. The pain is often limited to one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Most often, visual migraine, just like regular migraine headaches, can be brought about by stress, fatigue and changing estrogen levels. It occurs more...

More than twenty-nine million Americans suffer from migraine and that is just about 10% of the population. Migraine headaches afflict women nearly three times as much as men and migraines are not confined to adults with a significant number of children suffering from them as well. Attacks last anywhere from a just few hours to three or four days and in the case of longer attacks victims commonly...

What is a Migraine Headache? Most individuals don't realize that migraine headaches are a neurological disorder. Migraines are generally associated with severe pain that is located on one side of the head, but can affect both sides. The migraine also causes extreme sensitivity to light, typically causing a halo affect around light sources. Individuals who have not been diagnosis with...
